It’s been a fun weekend. Yesterday, Leslie, Jennifer and I along with a few other girls from school got together in the morning to talk about one of the girl’s experience living in the Middle East for a few years. Afterwards, we all went to Neomonde, a local Lebanese market and restaurant. I enjoyed a delicious beef shawarma sandwich, tabouli and fatoush salad. Fantastic! Afterward, Leslie, Jennifer and I headed over to the Farmer’s Market for the first time this season. It was packed with shoppers looking for deals on strawberries, tomatoes and lots of other produce in season right now. We enjoyed sampling all of the delicious strawberries and perusing the different flowers, plants and herbs available. I picked up some green tomatoes to try my hand at fried green tomatoes. I’ve enjoyed these at some down home restaurants around town, but haven’t actually made them myself. This first batch turned out a little crispy, but they were still very good. Since they only require a little cracker meal and olive oil, I’ll be sure to make some more of these in the future.

I picked up some tomato plants and cucumber vine this week. I love tomatoes from the garden and with the way I go through tomatoes around here and the way prices are soaring, I figure I should get a big return on my $6 investment. They’re little know, but in a couple of months, I’ll be feasting on their bounty- if Matthew doesn’t get to them first.

When I came home from work on Friday, this greeted me:

Matthew has been talking about building a stone wall around our house for the last year and half. The woods surrounding us are full of field stone. So on Friday he finally got around to starting on it with the help of a wheelbarrow. The corner there is about two feet tall. I think he’d studied enough Greek and philosophy and needed the break. He only has two more weeks left of school and then will take the summer off, so I imagine this will get down fairly quickly- if his back holds out!
We have little wild strawberries growing in the planter with the irises. I wouldn’t have noticed them except for the brilliant red popping out of the green:

I also put together my new little table from Ikea. I bought it in December in Michigan but couldn’t exactly fit it in the overhead compartment on the plane ride home, so my parents were kind enough to bring it down with them when they visited last month. I love that it looks like a vintage metal table from the fifties with it’s punched top and curved legs. The price ain’t bad either at just $7! I can’t wait for Ikea to open in Charlotte next spring!

Be careful in Ikea; having one nearby becomes addictive! When m’husband and I actually have an evening together, we spend way too many of them walking round the shop before stopping in the cafe for John to feed his Swedish meatball addiction.
My Yorkshire tomatoes are doing good too, although only my indoor ones are as big as your outdoor plants. Still waiting for the wild strawberries to appear.
